Do You Rule The System Or Does The System Rule You???

Pretty important question actually and one worth thinking about.

Lets look at the Morning Shift (Breakfast).

Most PD’s believe in promoting their morning show a couple of times an hour post 9 (or 10) am.

PD’s use a variety of tactics;

  • Short pieces from the show throwing forward to the next day
  • Show branding and music montages to promote both morning/breakfast and music positions
  • Show “Interactives” usually with live presenter intros

Now if you are thumping these, it makes sense that you will need more than one spot… some stations run quite a few. This may be better than flogging one or two that sound funny initially (or sell the relevant benefits of your show) but bore the hell out of listeners come 4pm!!  

This is great in theory but here’s where it comes unstuck….…

What happens is that some stations run inferior material in order to avoid repetition.        

The system is saying…   “Hey, we need 6 new pieces today”.

Stuff the system…

Sure add the new content that works but search for and schedule “great timeless” pieces as well.  I used to label them perishable

and un-perishable spots and include drop dead dates in the system.

This way you run the system and you will always only demonstrate your morning show with quality content.

PS… SPEND 15 MINUTES AND EVALUATE JUST HOW WELL YOU PROMOTE YOUR MORNING SHOW!
